Support Campaign & Event Implementation
This part of my internship gave me the opportunity to work hands-on with ABC's communication and event activities, particularly during a crucial pre-election period. Our goal was to raise awareness, strengthen community participation, and give local businesses a stronger platform to connect with the City Council.
One of my key contributions was supporting the 'Meet the Candidates' event — an initiative designed to bring business owners and council candidates together to discuss the future of Adelaide's business district.
I worked closely with the ABC team to manage communication around the event.
My responsibilities included:
- Drafting newsletters and email campaigns using Mailchimp.
- Assisting in event logistics, invitation design, and digital promotion.
- I also helped refine how the event was communicated publicly — focusing on collaboration and community impact, keeping the tone professional, neutral, and inclusive.
The Process
Each week, I developed short campaign updates, designed promotional content, and maintained event communication timelines.
Using the SMART framework, I set measurable goals such as improving campaign open rates and ensuring all invitations were distributed on time.
When working under tight deadlines, I learned to prioritise efficiently and communicate clearly with my mentor to keep the workflow smooth.
Outcome and Learning
The Mailchimp campaigns reached the target audience successfully, with open rates increasing from 44% to 59%, proving the effectiveness of our simplified, audience-focused communication.
The 'Meet the Candidates' event received positive feedback from traders and candidates alike, highlighting ABC's reputation for well-organised and inclusive community initiatives.
This experience taught me that clarity and timing are just as important as creativity in achieving campaign success.
It reinforced how strategic communication can strengthen community engagement when messages are built around purpose and collaboration.
